About Honor Society

Membership in the Marjorie Sinclair Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society is one of the highest honors which can be bestowed upon a Houma Junior High School student.  The goals of the chapter are to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in students.

In order to be considered for membership, a student must:

  • Have been enrolled at Houma Junior High School for at least one semester
  • Have an overall scholastic average of 3.2 or above per grading period
  • Have nothing lower than a B in conduct for all classes

All students who qualify scholastically are evaluated by the faculty and administration in the areas of character, leadership, and service.  Students who receive an above average rating and who have no record of suspension for the calendar year prior to the date of induction are invited to become members.  New members are inducted in the spring of each year.

Once a member, a student must:

  • Maintain a 3.2 scholastic average for each nine weeks
  • Maintain high standards of character (no office referrals, no Cs in conduct)

Students who fail to maintain the standards to which they are inducted are placed on probation.  A member’s failure to maintain standards a second time results in permanent dismissal.  Any serious infraction may result in immediate and permanent dismissal.
